How Does Paintless Dent Removal (PDR) work?

Paintless Dent Removal-Repair (PDR) is a technique used to remove dents or hail damage from cars without the need for expensive painting. The use of specialist tools means that we can remove minor car body dents from you car door, wing, body panels, roof or bonnet. A dent removal technician has a long set of metal bars each with different lengths, curves and shapes in order to aid the removal of the dent. A light and a reflection board with lines is applied to the car with a suction cup and this helps the technician to see where he needs to apply pressure and also the direction of the dent's flow so he knows what angle of application would work best. Most dents are removed from inside rather than outside as they are usually pushed in and it is easier to push them out.

When access is unavailable, in cases such as with door pillars or some double skinned metal panels we can use a technique called glue pulling which allows the dent to be removed, from the face of the panel rather than from behind, by gluing a glue tab to the outside of the dent and then using a glue puller to lift the dent.

How is it different to normal bodywork repairs?

It used to be that when you got a dent in your car you either had to live with it or pay a lot of money for it to be fixed by a traditional paint and body shop. The paint and body shop technicians would pull the dent out by drilling holes and using a mechanical dent puller. After the dent was straightened out, then the affected area is further straightened out with body filler, sanded then primed and painted. In many cases, especially with some metallic paints that are very hard to match, the resulting job will look good, but will be a little off and it will also affect the trade value of the car as bodywork can be found as a major deduct. With extreme dent removal this is no longer necessary; you can now have the dent massaged out by a skilled paintless dent removal technician and for a fraction of the cost of traditional bodywork.
